Things to Do

There are plenty of things to do for people of any age in the Triangle.

Even though the Triangle is not a huge city like New York or Chicago, we have a wide range of restaurants – much easier parking and lots of casual dining. In addition to the normal selection of fast food and family style restaurants, we have plenty of one-of-a- kind restaurants. The range is almost limitless – American, Tex-Mex, Chinese, Sushi, Indian, Japanese steak house, Seafood, Italian (both traditional and modern), Greek, Irish Pubs, Premium Steak Houses, Diners, and Cafeterias. Of course who can forget unbelievable North Carolina barbeque !! If you have a particular interest, let me know and I can point you in the right direction.

For those of you who atmosphere is more important than food, we have private restaurants, some which have live music on the weekends, and several restaraunts in hotels and inns. Not to mention coffee houses, etc…

If you’re interested in the places to eat and spend a weekend with friends (or to meet people), we’ve got many restaurants in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill which are an easy drive. Some of them have dancing and/or live music – others are just neighborhood restaurants where you will become a regular before too long. If you prefer to live in a suburb, you can usually expect a 15-30 minute drive to these places.

We also have a dueling piano bar at which is always packed with people every day of the week. Joe’s Crab Shack will keep you on your toes with great atmosphere, The Warehouse has a restaurant, bar and dancing, and The Charlie Goodnight Entertainment complex has a comedy club which attracts famous comedians, two restaraunts and a 70s & 80s dance club called Have a Nice Day Café. Jillians in Raleigh has a restaurant, adult arcade and a dance club (the dance club section is scheduled to open in the next few months)

We also have places to enjoy independent musicians and up-and-coming groups. These are mainly found in Chapel Hill, Durham, and downtown Raleigh. There are a number of places to see the big name groups at reasonable prices before they sell out a 20,000 person stadium. These are not usually advertised on television or radio –they’re often posted in a free local newspaper called The Spectator. They are also advertised in local music stores and by word of mouth. Hardees Walnut Creek Ampitheatre is a great place to enjoy a concert where you’ll see the famous names.

A well-kept secret in Raleigh is the movies at the NC Museum of Art. In the summer they will often host a film festival of old American films or a series of foreign films. If weather permits, they will have it on the lawn on a projection screen. They also have smaller rooms in the museum if weather is bad or in the fall or winter months.

Children are not forgotten here – we have several movie theaters, bowling alleys, and miniature golf facilities. Many of the smaller towns host an annual day including a parade and tons of activities for children of any age. Morehead Planetarium is a facinating trip for kids too. The Asheville Zoo is about an hour away and is worth the trip. And the kids love some of the weekend trip ideas!

Sports are very popular here. College basketball and Football – The UNC Tarheels, The Duke Bluedevils, and the NC State Wolfpack host local games open to the public which are among the most popular sports in the area. The Durham Bulls baseball team has a newer stadium that’s loads of fun. The latest craze here is NASCAR racing. Usually people drive to the races out of the Triangle area, but they’re usually not too far… The Raleigh Icecaps hockey team has games if you were afraid the South didn’t have hockey. A couple hours west of the Triangle is Charlotte which has the Charlotte Hornets NBA basketball team if you’re a NBA fan.
